The most commonly known effect of this hormone is a sleep aid. We all have naturally producing melatonin that is produced in the pineal gland. When it starts to get dark, our melatonin levels increase which promotes sleep. Once it becomes light outside, melatonin levels begin to decrease. Ultimately, your sleep and wake cycles are determined by how much melatonin you are producing.
